Ranked seasons generally last around 2 months. This gives you a bit of freedom to try out new strategies without worrying about losing your tier position. As long as you have even 1 LP, you won’t be demoted.ĭon’t worry about demoting from a tier-you can’t! Once you’ve earned your spot in a new tier, you’re there to stay. You’ll be demoted from a division when you lose a game at 0 LP. When you lose, you’ll see that glow retreat. As you win matches, the circle in your emblem will fill with a glowing light. This circle represents the 100 LP you need to reach the next division. Visually, this means filling up the circle on your rank emblem like the one below.
To promote, you need to win enough matches to reach 100 LP. Promotion and DemotionĮach division consists of 100 LP (League Points). If you’re playing in the Master tier, your MMR also plays a role in refining the matchmaking pool. You’ll be matched against an opponent who is as close to the same division as you as possible. The lower your division within a given tier, the closer you are to promotion! That means if you earn enough LP in Silver I you’ll be promoted to Gold IV, and so on. Within each tier, there are four divisions: IV, III, II, and I. There are seven tiers in LoR’s rankings: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Master. Another big area that’s lacking is the Weekly Vault system. This lets Riot get a bit more granular and helps display the true rank rather than an approximation that’s entirely binary from winning or losing.
Since this is where the best of the best players are located, the ranks within the tier are ranked by their Matchmaking Rating (MMR) from highest to lowest. Masters tier does function a bit differently than the rest of the ranked system. If you’re Gold, for example, you can not be demoted back to Silver. The one exception is the barrier between tiers. If you have exactly 1 LP, you’re safe from demotion for that one match even if you lose. If you lose a game while at 0 LP, you get demoted. The good news is that every time you advance a division you start off at 10 LP, giving you a small barrier to instant demotion.
This amounts to 10 additional LP per win starting with your third win in a row. You also get a win-streak bonus as long as you’re below Gold 4, making it easier to achieve those often desired ranks. At lower ranks it’s easier to progress than at higher ones. At any given time your LP is a number from 1 to 100 with the number gained or lost varying from tier to tier. As you win and lose matches you’ll gain and lose LP. Your rank within these divisions is tracked via LP. To be clear here is every rank from lowest to highest: Hit Iron I and advance another division and you’ll be promoted to Bronze IV. That means Iron IV is a lower rank than Iron III. Each one has four different divisions, counting down. There are seven tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Master. The Legends of Runeterra ranked system works in a very similar manner to League of Legends.
